In Summary - a stunner, but TOUGH. This is not a challenge for the unprepared. You must be comfortable in mountain and remote environments, and have the skills to negotiate them. The course is demanding and rewarding in equal measure. Giving a brief overview then:
START: Llanberis
FINISH: Storey Arms
Yr Wyddfa. Moelwyn, Rhinog and Mawddach to Cadair Idris. Tarrens, Pumlumon, Radnorshire Hills Cambrian Mountains and Bannau Brecheiniog, to Pen Y Fan.
You'll largely, though not exclusively, follow the Cambrian Way on your journey through Wales.
This is an event that is fully tracked, timed and monitored, and provides 5 indoor rest areas with toilets, first aid provision, food, drinks, masseurs, and a place to rest as you wish.
Our team of Outdoor Professionals will be strategically placed along the route for your additional safety. This aside, you need to be largely self sufficient along the route, and are strongly advised to have a support driver to meet you in case of retirement or you need retrieval for any reason.
Indoor Checkpoints/rest areas shall be set up at the following locations, with distances and cut off's:
- Penmeanpool (69km) Cut off 25hrs.
- Commins Coch (118km) Cut off 46hrs
- Devils Bridge (165km) Cut off 60hrs
- Rhiandwrmwyn (218km) Cut off 80hrs
- Llandeusant (246km) Cut off 90hrs
Please reach us at info@welsh3peaksrace.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Yr Wyddfa (3559ft), Cadair Idris (2931ft) and Pen y Fan (2901ft) are the Welsh 3 Peaks. The challenge of completing them in 24 hours, with an ascent of each one, and driving in between is gaining in popularity, but this is the first mass participation event which sees participants tackle them all and the ground in between, on foot!
If you are driving yourself, you can leave a car at the event start, and utilise the return coach from Brecon, on Saturday 27th September, which shall return to Llanberis departing at 9am. This is 14 hours after the event time limit, and allows for agood night's rest before the journey North. There is also the opportunity for those living nearer the finish than the start, to book a coach from Brecon to Llanberis, departing at 11am on Sunday 20th September. This means you ahve a vehicle to retrieve after the conclusion of the event. We do strongly reccommend that each competitor has a support driver to help in case of retirement, and also to assist with getting to the start/from the finish. Finally, Llanberis is a short bus/taxi ride away from Bangor train station, and Brecon has a train station itself.
Yes, support crews can meet competitors at any point, but CANNOT provide transport of any kind, in any direction for the competitor, or travel on foot along the trail with them. Each competitor must have the event tracker, and all mandatory kit items with them at ALL TIMES. In addition, competitors are not allowed any support/pacing whilst moving on the trail, from non-participating folk. This will result in disqualification.
A sealed drop bag of 40l maximum capacity is given to the team at registration, and we'll have it ready for you at each of the 5 indoor checkpoints during the event. Whe you leave a checkpoint, we'll move it on for you.
In additon, a sleeping bag (in a stuffsack) and camping mat/thermarest can also be handed to us for transportation, for you to sleep on at the checkpoints as required.
Good news, you don't have to do anything - other than keep it with you! We shall give it to you switched on, and that's it - you are tracked and timed on your journey South! The emergency SOS button on the top is not too be used, unless there's a life or limb threatening emergency!
An unfortunate reality of ultra running, is that sometimes we have to retire to due unforeseen circumstances. In the case you miss a cut off, we will take your race number and tracker, and you'll be officially retired from the event. We advise against continuing regardless, but if you choose to, you do so in the knowledge that you'll receive no event support thereafter. If you have to retire on the course between checkpoints due to injury or other factiors, we have processes in place to help ensure that you leave the course safely. We cannot unfortunately, guarantee transport back to where you need to get to afterwards, but we will do our best to help with transport logistics. The above is a reason why we strongly advise that you have a support crew/driver on hand to assist with this.
Yes, you'll receive a specially designed 'Welsh 3 Peaks' medal, a certificate, and a finisher t-shirt. All finishers shall be the first to go on the 'honours board' of completers, of the Welsh 3 Peaks Race!
